650b Wheeled Bikes

                                       Beautiful Fuji 650b conversion.

For those unaware, there are strange wheel sizes that reside between 26” (559) and 700c (622).  One, the 650b measures in at 584mm, roughly the halfway point.  So, why would cyclists need another wheel size? Well, for road going bikes there are a couple of advantages.

First, the 650b can work miracles for shorter riders wishing to run large volume tires, in conjunction with fenders.  On a 700c bike, this would mean severe toe overlap, the 650b on the other hand, should be able to accommodate frames down to 49cm without overlap.

Second, the “b” can convert a rough riding 700c racing machine, into a comfortable and surefooted lightweight.  While most race machines are comfortable with a maximum of a 25mm wide tire, the 40mm 650b will have a slightly smaller outside diameter, leaving room for the fenders you need for year round riding.  With that extra volume, you can drop the p.s.i  considerably, your body will thank you.

Lastly, the smaller diameter of the 650b will build you a stronger wheel with shorter spokes.  Also, moving the weight of your rim inwards makes the bikes accelerate briskly.

It can’t be all good, wider tires and lower pressure must slow you down, right?

Well, it’s not so simple, wider tires will always have more aerodynamic drag, but a well constructed wide tire, can actually roll faster in real world conditions.  Over uneven road surfaces, the softer tire will let you maintain your precious momentum.

If you like the sounds of the 650b come in and let us measure up your old road frame, or spec a ground up build.
